First Landing of Leonard Calvert in Maryland

Description

Here, Woodward portrays the Maryland colonists' landing on St. Clement's Island in March 1634. Woodward depicts the meeting between Leonard Calvert (1606-1647) and members of the Yaocomoco nation. Father Andrew White (1579-1656) is depicted holding a seemingly hastily-made cross while two other Yaocomoco, one of whom seem cautious of Calvert and White's intentions, watch. In the background, two rowboats of settlers are leaving the Ark.
