Flag

Description

Handmade state flag of North Carolina, which was put into effect in 1861, used throughout the Civil War. The first date is known as the unofficial date of the "Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence," which was when a group of North Carolinians, hearing of the shots fired at Lexington, declared independence from Great Britain. The second date is May 20, 1861, which was the day North Carolina seceded from the union. The flag was picked up by Reverend Joseph Fowler Jennison (1830-1911), Army Chaplain of the 203rd Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment. He was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana and ordained in 1857. He was a graduate of both Harvard and Princeton University. Jennison came to Baltimore in 1880 and was pastor of Catonsville Presbyterian Church until 1906. He is buried in Loudon Park.
