Portrait of Lydia Howard de Roth (1891-1971) holding a gas mask. de Roth was an air raid warden during World War II in the Chelsea neighborhood of London, England, from 1939 to 1941. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, to a family descended from both Francis Scott Key and John Eager Howard, de Roth was an active member in the city's high society as well as dedicated to her career in civil service.
