Uniform

Description

Uniform of John Lester Heavner (1910-1974), police officer of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company. The wool overcoat (.2), jacket (a), shirt (b), pants (c), and tie (e) date to the 1970s. Born and raised in Elkins, West Virginia, Heavner worked as a road laborer for the Works Progress Administration and bartender before World War II. After service in the Army, he was employed by the B&O Railroad. By the 1950s, he was working as a Brakeman out of Cumberland, Maryland. He eventually joined the Railroad Police. Heavner died in Baltimore in 1974 and is buried in Elkins, West Virginia.
