Dress

Description

Silk brocade evening dress worn by Laura Patterson Swan Robeson (1881–1973). Laura Patterson Swan Robeson purchased this Cauët Sœurs gown on the Rue de la Paix in Paris, a boulevard renowned for the numerous couture houses based there. This gown’s asymmetrical drapery billows at the hips while tapering tightly down to the hem, creating a “hobble skirt,” so called because its narrowness forced women to “hobble” when walking.
