Western Maryland Rail Road Company mortgage bond

Description

A $1,000 mortgage bond from the Western Maryland Rail Road Company guaranteed by the City of Baltimore and paid out on March 1, 1900. The bond is signed by George M. Bokee, tenth president of the company, and D. Preston Parr, company secretary. The verso is signed by Baltimore City Mayor Robert Banks and Register John A. Robb. The bond was likely issued to help finance the rebuilding of the Western Maryland Railroad infrastructure after the Civil War and expand operations to Hagerstown, Maryland (which the war had previously interrupted).
