Articles of incorporation for the Baltimore Independent Cadets

Description

Just prior to the start of the American Revolutionary War, Mordecai Gist began forming the Baltimore Independent Cadets, the first independent military company of its kind in Maryland. The group sought to protect their rights and fight for American independence. Members trained themselves and purchased their own uniforms and equipment, preparing for an armed encounter with the British Army and hoping to eventually join Maryland's formal military organization as an independent company. While this never happened, the Cadets did incorporate themselves into various military companies and regiments, fighting in both the North and South, and contributing greatly to the outcome of the American Revolution. This document served as the charter for the Baltimore Independent Cadets, and was signed by Mordecai Gist and 59 other men to solidify their membership.
