Marker, Boundary

Description

Mile marker 50 (53) of the Mason-Dixon line, from the west boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland. This marker is one of the crownstones that appeared at 5-mile intervals; it was quarried on the Isle of Portland, Dorset, England and carved to display the coat-of-arms of the Maryland Calvert family on the south side and Pennsylvania Penn family on the north. This image depicts the south side of the stone, adorned with the Calvert family shield.
