George Stewart Brown

Oil on canvas portrait painting of George Stewart Brown (1834-1890), ca. early-20th century, by Thomas Cromwell Corner (1865-1938). George was one of seven children to George Brown (1787-1859) and Isabella Eliza Johnston McLanahan Brown (1799-1885). He grew up at the estate "Mondawmin" in Baltimore. Both his father and grandfather worked for the famous financial company Alexander Brown & Sons. In addition, Brown was President of the Baltimore and Havana Steamship Company, Director of the National Mechanics' Bank, a Manager of the House of Refuge, a member of the Boards of the Blind Asylum and of the Maryland Bible Society, Trustee of the Peabody Institute, Vice President of the Canton Company, Director in the old Calvert Sugar Refinery Company, and the Union Railroad Company. He was also a Brigadier General in the Maryland Militia. George married Harriet Cady Eaton (1835-1893) in 1857. The couple had one child (Alexander Brown (1858-1949)) and are buried in Green Mount Cemetery in Baltimore.
