Description

Group portrait of bandleader James Reese Europe and his Clef Club Orchestra. The first all African-American orchestra in the United States, the Clef Club Orchestra comprised about 125 members and a wide variety of instruments. The orchestra was established as musical entertainment for Europe's venue the Clef Club, which was located in the Harlem neighborhood of New York City.
