Dress

Description

Silk chiffon and silk satin dress worn by Mary George White Bates (1885–1963). Two-tiered skirts were popular during the 1910s, with the bottom layer appearing tailored in contrast to the gauzy, diaphanous overlay. Following the decade’s adoration for decorated fabrics, Mary George White Bates’s dress is embellished with jet beading arranged in geometric patterns that echo the Art Nouveau movement’s use of stylized motifs and shapes.
