Sarah Fitzhugh Bland (Mrs. Theodorick Bland, Sr.)

Oil on canvas portrait painting of Sarah Fitzhugh Bland (Mrs. Theodorick Bland, Sr.) (1748-1793), 1767, by John Hesselius. Sarah was born in Bedford, Virginia. In 1772, she married Theodorick Bland (1746- ), a merchant and Enlish immigrant. Their son, Theodorick Bland, Jr. (1776-1848) served as a Federal Judge for the Maryland District Court and later served as the 5th Chancellor of Maryland. In 1767, this painting was commissioned for £20 and 16 shillings.
