The disgraceful attack on the Massachusetts and Pennsylvania troops, on their passage through Baltimore, April 19th, 1861

Description

A print depicting the Baltimore riot of 1861, which resulted in the first deaths by hostile action of the American Civil War. On one side of the conflict were antiwar Maryland Democrats known as "Copperheads" and other Southern, Confederate sympathizers. On the other side were Massachusetts and Pennsylvania state militia regiments that had been called up for federal service and were on their way to Washington, D.C. In this print, civilians can be seen throwing stones and firing at the Massachusetts and Pennsylvania troops, many of whom are aiming rifles with bayonets in their direction.
