Description

Commemorative medal for the Tuesday Club of Annapolis, Maryland, May 14, 1746. The Tuesday Club was founded in 1745 by Scottish immigrant, Dr. Alexander Hamilton of Annapolis. Elite men gathered together every other Tuesday at Hamilton's house to engage in banter, witty songs, and satirical rhetoric. The club continued until 1756. This medal bears the symbol of crossed hands on the front to symbolize "the amity and Social Spirit" Hamilton wanted the members to share. The obverse of the medal includes the motto, "Libertas et natale solum" (liberty and my native land) to symbolise the free expression of ideas each member was expected to contribute. The medal was originally donated to the Maryland Historical Society on October 14, 1852 and transferred from the library to the museum in 1973.
