Portrait of Martha Ann ‘Patty’ Atavis

Description

A cased daguerreotype portrait of Martha Ann "Patty" Atavis (circa 1816-1874). Atavis was an enslaved person in the home of Dr. John Whitridge of Baltimore, Maryland. On the inside of the case is a handwritten note that reads: "Martha Ann Atavis / generally known as "Patty" / Died February 26th, 1874 / 58 years old over 36 years the devoted nurse in the family of Dr. John Whitridge of Baltimore."
