Portrait of Martha Ann ‘Patty’ Atavis with Anna Whitridge

Description

A cased tintype portrait of Martha Ann "Patty" Atavis (circa 1816-1874) with Anna Whitridge. Atavis was an enslaved person in the home of Doctor John Whitridge of Baltimore, Maryland. She was sold to Whitridge in 1839 and cared for the family’s children, including Anna, until her death. She is buried next to another of her charges, Olivia Whitridge (1837-1839), in Baltimore's Green Mount Cemetery.

Notes

The young girl in the tintype seen here was earlier identified as Alice Lee Whitridge. A daguerreotype of this same image exists in a private collection and within the case for that item was a handwritten note identifying the young girl as Anna Whitridge.
