Duck Hunting on the Susquehanna

Description

Oil on canvas painting of "Duck Hunting on the Susquehanna Flats", 1856, by Hugh Newell. This scene features several hunters in appropriate attire, two hunting dogs, and a pile of ducks. One of the men leans against a shotgun or rifle. Hugh Newell (1830-1915) was born in Belfast, Ireland. He emigrated to the United States in 1850, and initially lived in Pennsylvania, before living in Baltimore. Newell was connected to a number of schools and organizations including Johns Hopkins University and Maryland Institute of Fine Arts (now MICA). He held an art exhibit at the Maryland Historical Society from 1853-1858. This painting is a sister to "Duck Hunting on the Susquehanna" (1855) (2019.32.1), which shows the same people, dogs, and landscape features as this one.
