Yachting in Baltimore Harbor

Description

Oil on canvas landscape painting of "Yachting in Baltimore Harbor", ca. 1865, by James Edward Buttersworth. This scene depicts three large, American sailing yachts in the foreground. At left is Lazaretto Point in Baltimore Harbor, which is directly opposite of Fort McHenry. The white lighthouse depicted was built in 1831 and several industrial buildings were added in the decades that followed. At right, and in the distance, is Fort Carroll, which was built in 1848 in the middle of the Patapsco River. Buttersworth (1817-1894) was one of the most famous maritime artists of the nineteenth century. He was an English painter who spent most of his life in England and New York.
