Sketch on the Appomattox at Bizarre

Description

Pencil and ink on paper drawing of "Sketch on the Appomattox at Bizarre", 1796, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The sketch features a heavily wooded landscape and Virginia's Appomattox River at center. In June 1796, Latrobe visited the tobacco plantation named "Bizarre", owned by the Randolph's, a prominent and wealthy Virginia family. During his trip, Latrobe recorded in his journal that Bizarre was a "French name, but not quite applicable to Mr. Richard Randolph's house at present for there is nothing bizarre about it that I can see." The plantation house, near Farmville, Virginia, burned down in 1813.
