View of Mount Vernon looking to the North

Description

Watercolor on paper drawing of "View of Mount Vernon looking to the North", July 17, 1796, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. On July 16, 1796, Latrobe journeyed to President George Washington's Virginia estate "Mount Vernon" to deliver a letter from Washington's nephew, and Latrobe's friend, Bushrod Washington (1762-1829). Latrobe dined with Washington and his family, stayed at their home as a guest overnight, and departed after they shared breakfast the next morning. This view captures the front of the home as Latrobe looks to the north before departing Washington's home. The Potomac River is on the right.
