Bridge Over Brandywine

Description

Watercolor on paper drawing of "Bridge Over Brandywine", ca. 1804-1806, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. In 1804, Latrobe was hired by the Chesapeake & Delaware Canal as engineer and architect of the project. During this period, he and his family moved to a house on Market Street in Wilmington, Delaware, which terminates at the bridge, depicted in this drawing, that crosses Brandywine Creek. The company ran out of money by 1805 and Latrobe left the project in 1806.
