Desk, Portable

Description

Portable writing desk, likely English in origin owned by Maryland lawyer, author, and poet Francis Scott Key (1779-1843). According to the donor, a descendant, Key saw and admired this desk on a visit with President James Madison (1751-1836) and his wife Dolley Madison (1768-1849) at their home. Later, Dolley sent the desk to Key's home in Georgetown as a gift.
