Eleanor Darnall

Description

Oil on canvas portrait painting of "Eleanor Darnall" (1704-1796), ca. 1710, by Justus Englehardt Kuhn. Eleanor was born at "The Woodyard," in Prince George's County to Anne Digges Darnall (1685-ca. 1750) and Henry Darnall II (1682-1759). She was one of very few women in colonial America to attend school and was sent to Europe to complete her education. Around 1727, she married Daniel Carroll (1696-1751), a wealthy merchant, and Irish immigrant. The couple had eight children, seven of whom survived into adulthood. She was mother to several important Marylanders, including Daniel Carroll II (1730-1796), a founding father of the United States, and John Carroll (1735-1815), Archbishop of Baltimore and founder of Georgetown University. Eleanor never remarried, and lived an astonishingly long life for that era, passing away at 92 years of age. She is buried at Saint John the Evangelist Catholic Church Cemetery in Forest Glen, Montgomery County, Maryland.
