Mary Darnall Carroll (Mrs. Charles Carroll the Settler)

Oil on canvas portrait painting of Mary Darnall Carroll (Mrs. Charles Carroll, the Settler) (1678-1742) by Gustavus Hesselius. Mary was born into Maryland Darnall family in Anne Arundel County. Her father, Colonel Henry Darnall (1645-1711) briefly served as Deputy Governor of the Maryland Province. In 1793, at the age of only 15, she became the second wife of Charles Carroll, the Settler (1660-1720). This marriage, secured him a political appointment in Maryland, as well as a large tract of land in Prince George's County. The couple lived at a home in Annapolis and at "Dougheregan" plantation in Howard County. They had ten children, but only five survived childhood.
