Charles Carroll of Annapolis (Charles Carroll II)

Description

Oil on Canvas portrait painting of Charles Carroll of Annapolis (1702-1782), ca. 1712, by Justus Engelhardt Kuhn. Carroll was born in Annapolis and was the son of Charles Carroll the Settler (1661-1720), an early Maryland settler and Attorney General of the Colony, and Mary Darnall Carroll (ca. 1678-1742). His hand rests on the silver collar of a deer, which would likely have an address on it for return. A similar collar is worn by an enslaved boy in the painting of Henry Darnall III (1912.1.13) by the same artist.
