Oil on Canvas portrait painting of Catherine Cole Bowers Smith (Mrs. Nicholas Smith) (1782-1864) by Edward Bowers. Catherine was born in Lancaster, Pennsylvania to German immigrant parents. In 1802, she married her first husband John Henry Bowers (1864-1825), a German immigrant, in Baltimore County, Maryland. The couple lived in Baltimore and had six children. After her husbands death, she married her second husband Nicholas Smith (1780- ) in 1832. Catherine is buried in Green Mount Cemetery, Baltimore, Maryland.
