At the time, the original painting was owned by a "Mrs. Howard" of Baltimore. Peggy married Maryland Revolutionary War officer and Governor John Eager Howard (1752-1827) in 1787. The couple had nine children. During the Centennial Celebration in 1876, commemorative plates were produced called the "Republican Court Series." Eighteen plate designs were commissioned by Marylander and future Baltimore Mayor James Hodges (1822-1895). The Maryland Center for History and Culture owns six plates from this series. All six represent prominent women during President Washington's Administration.
