Colonel Gerard Briscoe

Oil on canvas portrait painting of "Colonel Gerard Briscoe" (1737-1801), ca. 1790, by Charles Peale Polk. Gerard was born in Maryland to Robert Briscoe (1718-1798) and Anne Wood Briscoe (1818-ca. 1776). Around 1760, he married Ruth Perry Briscoe (1732- c. 1763) at Rock Creek Parish, Prince George's County, Maryland (now NW Washington, D.C.). The couple had two children. After her death, he married Margaret Baker Briscoe (ca. 1745-1814) and they had around six children. During the Revolutionary War, Gerard served in the Virginia Militia. After the war, the family moved to the area around Winchester, Frederick County, Virginia.
