John Edward Beach

Description

Oil on portrait painting of six-year-old "John Edward Beach" (1850-1918) and his dog, 1856, by Edward Bowers. John, born in Flint, Michigan, was the first son of Sabina V. Bowers Beach (1824-1896) and Seth C. Beach (1823-1865). His father was a lumber merchant and the family lived in both Flint and Saginaw during his youth. At age fifteen his father died. In 1879, he married Christina Elizabeth Smith (1851- ). John moved his family to Peru after the marriage and the couple had three children. By 1900, he was living in German Flatts, New York and working as a Machinist. John's wife passed away in the early 1900s and he continued to live with his daughters. He is buried in Armory Hill Cemetery in Ilion, New York. The Maryland Center for History and Culture also owns portraits of his father Seth (1970.81.3) and mother Sabina (1982.2.5). All three portraits were painted by his uncle (Sabina's brother) and artist Edward Bowers (1822-1870).
