Portrait of Mordecai Gist

Description

Half-length portrait depicting Mordecai Gist (1742-1792) by Charles Wilson Peale (1741-1827). Gist is posed seated in a side chair holding book in right hand, with his left hand inside his jacket. He wears a tricornered hat and Revolutionary War uniform of blue coat with gold braid and red collar. Gist was an accomplished merchant, sailor, and soldier.
