Notes

In 1817, Baltimoreans recognized John Rodgers's (1773-1838) contribution to the defense of Baltimore and commissioned a 50-piece table service from Philadelphia silversmiths Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner. Each piece is inscribed, "Presented by the/ Citizens of Baltimore to/Com. John Rodgers/in testimony of their Sense of/the important aid afforded by him/in the defense of Baltimore on/the 12th & 13th of Sept. 1814." When the service was completed, it was displayed at Fielding Lucas's Baltimore print shop for several days before it was presented to Rodgers.
