Voyage of the Deutschland

Presented by The German Society of Maryland and the MCHC Maritime Committee; Presented September 2016-April 2019

This exhibition commemorated the centennial of the mysterious arrival of the Deutschland submarine to Baltimore’s harbor and the United States’ involvement in World War I. Objects included a model of the Deutschland submarine measuring five and a half feet long, which is said to be the most authentic replica in existence.

The Voyage of the Deutschland

In July 1916, the German submarine Deutschland arrived in Baltimore. Its voyage and presence in the harbor tapped into a cultural bond between Maryland’s German American residents. Deutschland’s remarkable voyage also tested this nation’s role in a world at war. The 100th anniversary of this event served as a reminder of the delicate balance between engagement and isolation.
