Admiral Cockburn burning and plundering Havre de Grace on the 1st of June 1813. Done from a sketeh [sic] taken on the spot at the time

Description

Depiction of Admiral George Cockburn, a British Navy officer during the War of 1812, burning and plundering the Maryland port of Havre de Grace. This hand-colored etching was made from a sketch taken on the spot and is believed to be the work of William Charles, a Scottish caricaturist and etcher who came to the United States in the early 1800s. This attribution stems from the "Account book of Mathew Carey, Oct. 12, 181[4]," held by the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester, Mass. The book includes an entry recorded as "To Wm. Charles Dr.--To Eng. plate--Burning Havre de Grace--$20.00." A second etching, a similar but redrawn version of the view, is also attributed to Charles.
