Watercolor on paper drawing of "Alic, a faithful and humorous old servant belonging to Mr. Bathurst Jones of Hanover", November 3, 1797, from the Latrobe Sketchbooks, by Benjamin Henry Latrobe. The scene features "Alic", an African American slave or servant of Bathurst Jones (1760-1810) of Hanover Town, Virginia. Alic stands over a wash bowl and stand, has his hair tied back, and appears to be wearing a uniform or livery. In November 1797, Latrobe visited his friend Bathurst Jones and observed billiards games in the evenings at the tavern.
