The scene features "Alic", an African American slave or servant of Bathurst Jones (1760-1810) of Hanover Town, Virginia. Alic stands over a wash bowl and stand, has his hair tied back, and appears to be wearing a uniform or livery. In November 1797, Latrobe visited his friend Bathurst Jones and observed billiards games in the evenings at the tavern.
