Basket
Description
This basket from Woodlawn Plantation in Prince George’s County, Maryland, is a rare example of an object made by an enslaved person for their own use. Woven with broom sedge and reeds, this basket is rounded at the bottom and narrows to a small opening at top. In 1860, around the time this basket was made, eighty-one enslaved people lived at Woodlawn Plantation, which was owned by Washington Jeremiah Beall (1818-1895).
