Bayonet

Description

Saw bayonet, patented by F. W. Alexander, Baltimore Light Artillery, U.S.A. 1864; approved by a Military Board, Fort McHenry. Likely the sole prototype from patent number 45,009. The intention of the bayonet was "such a form that it can be employed as a saw, in addition to its use as a weapon, thus assisting the soldier to construct abates, breast works, cabins, and all other works in which the saw is a useful implement."
