Bench

Description

One of a pair, Baltimore painted bench, ca. 1810-1815. This backless couch features scrolled ends, a caned seat with seat squab and bolsters, and turned legs on casters. It is attributed to John (1777-1851) and Hugh (1781-1831) Finlay (fl.1799-1840) of Baltimore, and was made for Alexander Brown (1764-1834), made famous for establishing the first investment banking firm in the United States. Along with this elegant bench, he purchased a pair of card tables, sofa, dining table, and fifteen chairs.
