Blotter

Description

Salt-glazed stoneware sander, iron-oxide dip around exterior, round, flat-top with holes. Sanders held powdered gum sandarac, which, when sprinkled on paper, prevented ink smearing. Strictly an eighteenth and early nineteenth-century form, stoneware potters rarely manufactured sanders by 1825.
