Bottle

Description

Square Amelung glass bottle. Engraved on the bottle's front is "B. Johnson / 1788." John Amelung, a German immigrant and glassmaker, settled in Frederick County, Maryland in 1784. The following year he was in business producing fine tableware, bottles, and windows. Founders, such as such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and Benjamin Franklin were among the factory's most prominent supporters. Going out of business after only ten years, few examples of Amelung glass survive.
