Bowl, Sugar

Silver and gold sugar bowl, circa 1795, by an unknown American maker. This basin may have been bought secondhand and bears the monogram of its previous owner, as well as "CJB" for Charles Joseph Bonaparte (1851-1921). It became the model for the sugar basin of the same shape which was made by Kirk in 1876. The only change was the addition of a gold rather than silver gallery. This sugar basin is engraved "Bella Vista" on the underside of the base, a reference to Charles Joseph Bonaparte's country home in Baltimore County.
