Charlotte Augusta Norris Calvert (Mrs. Charles Benedict Calvert)

Description

Oil on canvas portrait painting of Charlotte Augusta Norris Calvert (1816-1876), 1843, by Thomas Sully. Charlotte was born in Baltimore and married Charles Benedict Calvert (1808-1864). The couple had seven children and lived at the Calvert family home "Riversdale Mansion" in Prince George's County. Mr. Calvert was a member of the Maryland House of Delegates in 1839 and 1843-1844. In 1856, he founded the Maryland Agricultural College, which was later renamed University of Maryland, College Park. During the Civil War, he represented the 6th District in the U.S. House of Representatives (1861-1863). Charlotte is buried in the Calvert Family Cemetery in Riverdale Park.
