Claire McCardell holding notepad

Description

A portrait of fashion designer Claire McCardell (1905-1958) holding a notepad and pencil, modeling a cotton shirtwaist dress of her own design. The dress combines several of her innovations such as big patch pockets, loosely-fitting sleeves, double stitching in contrasting colors, and a softly gathered skirt. Born in Frederick, Maryland, McCardell pioneered the creation of casual, comfortable American sportswear for women.
