Fashion designer Claire McCardell (1905-1958) standing on a balcony in New York City, New York. Behind her is the top of the New York Central Building (now the Helmsley Building) and in the background at right is the Waldorf Astoria located in the Midtown Manhattan neighborhood of the city. Born in Frederick, Maryland, McCardell pioneered the creation of casual, comfortable American sportswear for women.
