Claire McCardell with hands on knees

Description

Fashion designer Claire McCardell (1905-1958) leaning over slightly, with hands on knees, surrounded by metal triangles that are suspended from the ceiling. She models a silk jersey pleated column dress of her design. This attire is reminiscent of her “Monastic” dress, a style defined by its loose shape and lack of a defined waistline until the wearer used a belt to cinch in the fabric. Born in Frederick, Maryland, McCardell pioneered the creation of casual, comfortable American sportswear for women.
