Fashion designer Claire McCardell (1905-1958) standing in a line, according to height, with her three brothers in front of the family home located at 301 Rockwell Terrace in Frederick, Maryland. She and her brothers--Adrian Leroy (1908-2002), Robert Clingan (1913-2009), and John Malcolm (1916-2008)--were all born in Frederick to Eleanor (1880-1968) and Adrian McCardell (1873-1945), who was a state senator and president of the Frederick County National Bank. Claire McCardell pioneered the creation of casual, comfortable American sportswear for women.
