Drawing

Description

Landscape sketch in pencil. A large bare branch extends from the bottom left corner to the center top of the composition in the foreground. A rocky, tree-filled landscape is seen in the background across the river. The Clapham family of Loudon County, Virginia were active in farming, quarrying, and canal work for generations. In 1815, Latrobe identified the marble on Clapham Island - located in the middle of the Potomac River - as the perfect material for the construction of the columns to be used on the U.S. Capitol building. Now called Mason Island, the 1.5 mile long stretch of land is nearest to Dickerson, Maryland.
