Dress
Description
Silk brocade dress, first worn by Elizabeth Woodrop Davey (1726–1782) and later worn by Catherine Davey McKim (1766–1860). Women routinely restyled old-fashioned garments. When originally constructed in the 1740s, this silk brocade dress’s bodice accommodated for the display of a stomacher, a removable decorative panel. Catherine Davey McKim, who owned this dress during its last configuration, most noticeably updated the dress in the 1780s by converting the bodice into one that completely closed once stomachers became outmoded.
