Description

A shift dress with a square neckline and matching sash belt, designed by Claire McCardell (1905-1958) for the label Claire McCardell Clothes by Townley. Born in Frederick, Maryland, McCardell pioneered the creation of casual, comfortable American sportswear for women.

The L-85 order issued by the US Production Board restricted not only types of fabric but also how much yardage could be used on each garment. McCardell, who had already been making sleeker silhouettes than her contemporaries, thrived under this rationing measure.
