Dress

Description

Sheer nylon silk dress designed by Claire McCardell (1905-1958) for the label 'Claire McCardell Clothes by Townley.' The industrial brass hook-and-eye corset closures used on this dress became a McCardell trademark—first developed in response to the rationing of World War II. Born in Frederick, Maryland, McCardell pioneered the creation of casual, comfortable American sportswear for women.
