Elijah Stansbury (1791-1883)

Half-length three-quarter profile portrait of Elijah Stansbury (1791-1883) by Joshua Johnson (fl. 1796-1824). Stansbury served in the War of 1812 and was a merchant and Mayor of Baltimore, making him representative of Johnson's patrons who were typically Baltimore's successful artisans and merchants. He is pictured seated wearing a black coat and vest with a white stock. He holds a paper in his right hand while his left arm is resting on a book.
